The Phoebe Buffet in me...

The other day, I was happily munching my sandwich in the cafeteria, with my friends around me. And when I bit into it, my friend stared at me quizzically and asked me if i eat eggs. Only then did I realize what she was getting at. I ordered for a vegetable sandwich but I had been given an egg sandwich. Having never had boiled eggs before, I didn't know what it'd taste like, I ended up munching the sandwich happily, thought the white bits were soft cheese flakes... I did finish it even after knowing that it was egg. I do have eggs-in the form of cakes and other bakery products. I have had omelets too. But that's not the issue... I wonder how many times I had been given chicken puffs and egg sandwiches before when I had asked for their vegetarian counterparts. And I know I wouldn't have known the difference.

A few months ago, a Bengali gentleman asked me how it was 'possible' for people down south to remain vegetarian all our lives. I laughed it off. My mom didn't find it funny!

Come to think of it, I remember a small story on 'Young World' about a man walking along a beach. He throws back into the sea, all the jelly fish(or some sea organism i can't recall the name of) he can get hold of, that get stranded on the shore during waves/tide. Another man who watches him, comes to him and asks,"You can't throw all the fish back in... What difference is it going to make?". He throws another jelly fish into sea and answers,"Yes, it does make a difference to that single fish I threw in just now".

If the world slaughters just one animal less because I am vegetarian, I am indeed a happy person!

I once had a similar experience in McD's here. And my friend had a look at what I ordered and told me it was the chicken burger against the veggie burger I had asked for. I went and complained and the sales-person apologized and gave me a coupon, which told my next lunch was on them!

Life is indeed a little tough for Vegetarians, that too when u step outside India.
